How to Clean a Puzzle

Puzzles can collect dust, fingerprints, and the occasional smudge — especially if they’ve been displayed or stored for a long time. Cleaning them gently keeps the artwork vibrant and the pieces in good condition.

Dry Cleaning (Safest Method)

Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to wipe each piece. This removes dust, lint, and fingerprints without risking moisture damage.

Light Damp Cleaning (Use Sparingly)

If a puzzle has stubborn dirt:

  • Lightly dampen a microfiber cloth
  • Wipe gently
  • Dry each piece immediately

Avoid soaking or using harsh cleaners — moisture can warp the cardboard.

Compressed Air for Dust

A can of compressed air works well for removing dust from puzzle boxes, trays, and tight corners.

Cleaning a Finished, Glued Puzzle

If your puzzle is glued and framed, you can clean it like a poster:

  • Use a dry cloth
  • Avoid sprays
  • Never use glass cleaner directly on the puzzle surface

What to Avoid

  • Baby wipes
  • Alcohol
  • Household cleaners
  • Excess water
  • Scrubbing

These can damage the artwork or warp the board.
